Gesselen Castle

Haus Gesselen was first documented in 1247 as a Guelders fief. In 1403, it belonged to Derik von Pallant, and in 1498, it passed to Arndt von Eyll through his granddaughter Aleyd. At that time, the complex included a manor house, an outer bailey, and two mills. In 1584, during the Eighty Years' War, Haus Gesselen was attacked and plundered by Dutch troops because its then-owner, Wilhelm von Hornum, intended to make it available to Spanish forces. After his release for ransom, the damaged castle was repaired and subsequently rebuilt and expanded in 1615.
