Grünewald Castle

Haus Grünewald is a villa with an English landscape garden in Solingen-Gräfrath and is protected as a historical monument. Due to its representative appearance, the estate is colloquially also called Schloss Grünewald.

The estate dates back to a medieval farmstead. The current building was erected between 1817 and 1824; the slate cladding of the facade dates from the second half of the 19th century. From 1843 to 1861, the ophthalmologist Friedrich Hermann de Leuw lived on the estate. The Düsseldorf branch of the entrepreneurial Piedboeuf family acquired the estate in 1880 through Jean Louis Piedboeuf, who also died here in 1891. It remained in family ownership until 1997 and always served as a renowned meeting point for the widely branched family.
