Hohenover Castle

The origins of Haus Hohenover possibly date back to the Carolingian era, when it was likely granted as a fief to deserving individuals. In the 14th century, the noble family von Galen emerged as the first known owners by name, starting with Henrich von Galen around 1370. For five generations, the estate remained in the hands of this family until it became heavily indebted under Balthasar von Galen at the end of the 16th century. After his death in 1634, it was seized by creditors. Balthasar's son Johann Dietrich von Galen sold the inheritance in 1667 to Franz von Bodelschwingh. After further changes of ownership, in 1745, Hamm's mayor Christian Albert zur Heiden acquired the estate.
