Husen Castle

The classical building, erected in 1830, is now privately owned.

Originally conceived as a prestigious residence for the influential merchant family Schmidt, the building quickly became a social hub. Its magnificent ballrooms and salons hosted numerous events, from opulent balls to intimate literary evenings. The Schmidt family, known for their patronage of the arts, transformed their home into a vibrant center of culture and intellectual exchange.

The architecture of the building is a prime example of classicism, characterized by its clear lines, symmetrical facade, and harmonious proportions. The renowned architect Johann Müller, a student of the famous Karl Friedrich Schinkel, was responsible for the design. Müller masterfully combined aesthetic elegance with practical functionality, creating a building that was both impressive and comfortable.

The Facade

The facade is adorned with Corinthian columns and delicate stucco work, giving it a timeless elegance. The main entrance, framed by a portico, leads into a spacious vestibule.

Interior Design

Inside, high ceilings, parquet floors, and intricately carved wooden panels characterize the rooms. The grand staircase, a masterpiece of craftsmanship, connects the different floors. Each room tells its own story, reflecting the tastes and lifestyle of its former inhabitants.

Over the decades, the building has undergone several changes of ownership and use. During the Second World War, it served as a temporary administrative building, but fortunately escaped major damage. In the post-war period, it was used as a school for several years before being extensively renovated and restored to its original splendor in the 1990s.

Today, the building stands as a proud witness to a bygone era, combining historical charm with modern comfort. It is a testament to the architectural mastery of its time and a valuable part of the city's cultural heritage.

The current private owners are committed to preserving the building's historical integrity while adapting it to contemporary needs. Plans include opening parts of the building to the public for guided tours and cultural events, allowing a wider audience to experience its unique atmosphere and rich history.
