In Kleve, North Rhine-Westphalia, the Koekkoek House stands, a manor and country house that now serves as a museum. It was once the home of the Dutch painter Barend Cornelis Koekkoek and his family.

Barend Cornelis Koekkoek, a landscape painter of the 19th century, settled in Kleve in 1834. After several moves, he acquired a property in 1842. There, in 1834, he had a three-story studio tower, known as the Belvedere, built, which offered him ideal northern light for his work and from whose platform he could enjoy a wide-ranging panorama. Between 1846 and 1848, under the direction of architect Anton Weinhagen, the palace in classical style was erected, becoming known as “Palais Koekkoek.” Here, Koekkoek created many of his works.
