Lüssem Manor

Lüssem Castle is located in Nemmenich, a district of Zülpich in the Euskirchen district in North Rhine-Westphalia, on the Rotbach river.

In 867, the locality of Lüssem was first mentioned as "villa Ludesheim" of Count Matfried. In the 13th century, the castle must have been built in the Rotbach floodplains, which Johann von Vorst received as a fief from the Count of Jülich in 1323. Previously, it was owned by Prüm Abbey. The castle is not mentioned again until 1572. At this time, it was owned by Franz von der Mahr. In 1641, the castle was destroyed by Hessian troops during the Thirty Years' War. After the estate was rebuilt, it consisted, according to a contemporary description, of a solid house surrounded by moats and secured by a drawbridge, along with a barn and stables. In 1681, the castle passed by inheritance to Elise von Horrich. Elise married Johann Marcus von Wymar (1656–1729) in 1682 in her second marriage. His great-granddaughter, Maria Carolina Josepha von Wymar (1789–1866), married Franz Freiherr von Dalwigk zu Lichtenfels (1779–1855) from Boisdorf in 1814, whose son of the same name sold the Lüssem Castle estate, which had been leased since the 18th century, into common hands in 1885.

Today, only the manor house from 1801 of the castle remains largely preserved. The moats are almost completely filled in, and the outbuildings have been completely altered.
