Lüssem Manor

The first mention of the locality Lüssem as "villa Ludesheim" dates back to 867, when it was owned by Count Matfried. The origins of Lüssem Castle in the Rotbach floodplain lie in the 13th century. In 1323, it was granted to Johann von Vorst as a fief from the Count of Jülich, having previously belonged to Prüm Abbey. The estate was mentioned again in 1572, when it was owned by Franz von der Mahr. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was destroyed by Hessian troops in 1641. After its reconstruction, the estate comprised a fortified house surrounded by moats and secured by a drawbridge, along with a barn and stables.
