In Schwelm, North Rhine-Westphalia, Haus Martfeld is a manor and estate house whose origins trace back to a 14th-century moated castle. Today, it is a cultural venue that offers insights into regional history and hosts a program of events.

History+

The complex, whose name refers to marshy terrain, was built at the beginning of the 14th century as a burgmann's seat for the Electorate of Cologne. A motte, considered a predecessor, existed nearby even before. Haus Martfeld was part of a defensive network of the Archbishop of Cologne. Early owners included the Knights Wandhoff. The oldest preserved part of the current building is the round tower from 1450. In the 17th century, Adolf Wilhelm Raitz von Frentz expanded the complex with the north wing (1618) and the gate tower with drawbridge (1627).
