Palais Metternich

The origins of Haus Metternich date back to the 13th century, when it emerged as part of the possessions of the von Bachem family, possibly from a medieval residential tower. The court changed hands multiple times and was granted as a fief by the city of Koblenz to the Lords of Eltz in the 15th century. After the court fell into disrepair in the mid-16th century, it passed to the Barons of Metternich-Winneburg-Beilstein in 1644, who erected the current building in 1674. Klemens Wenzel Lothar von Metternich was born here in 1773.
