Palant Castle

The origins of Haus Palant likely trace back to an old Frankish royal estate, making it the starting point for the development of Weisweiler. Although the first documentary mention only occurred in 1456, a Reinhard von Palant is already named as a vassal in 1323. The Palant family, who named themselves after their castle from 1342/44, was elevated to the status of Imperial Barons by Emperor Charles V. Around 1600, Floris II von Palant had the castle renovated in the Dutch Renaissance style. After his death in 1639, the property passed to the Waldeck-Eisenberg family through marriage, who sold it to the Counts of Hatzfeld in 1682. Following earthquakes in 1755 and 1756, the main house was restored and a new outer bailey was erected. In 1769, Elector Karl Theodor von der Pfalz acquired the complex for his illegitimate son. French revolutionary troops damaged Haus Palant again in 1794.
