Sandfort Castle

Sandfort Castle, often also called Haus Sandfort, is a moated castle in Olfen in Münsterland.
The castle was probably built around 1450. The two round towers of the building date from this period. The upper castle was structurally altered several times and dates from the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th centuries. The mighty tower was renovated, its spire dates from the Baroque period.
The two outbuildings to the left and right of the gate entrance were built in 1851 and 1857 in the neoclassical style.
Initially, the castle was owned by a family. Thereafter, from 1300 to about 1550, it was owned by the Lords, who were followed by the von Fridag-Löringhoff family, in 1719 by the von Bodelschwingh-Plettenberg family, and finally in 1869 by the Counts von Wedel. Today the complex is owned by the Count vom Hagen-Freiherr von Plettenberg family.
As the castle is privately owned, it can only be viewed from the outside.
