Scheppen Manor

The existence of Haus Scheppen can be traced back to the 13th century. In 1344, Gillburg von Scheppen was documented as a feudal tenant of the estate. The von Scheppen family held important offices, including the hereditary seneschalship of Werden Abbey and the hereditary chamberlainship of Essen Abbey. In the 15th century, the fief passed to Knight Kracht Stecke, who also owned the neighboring Haus Baldeney. Later, in the 18th century, the Barons von Bottlenberg, known as Schirp, and the baronial family von Ritz followed as feudal tenants. In 1930, Haus Scheppen served as accommodation for miners. Five years later, in 1935, the complex was surrounded by a moat during the damming of Lake Baldeney. During World War II, in 1944, the southwestern wing was severely damaged and burned out in an air raid, after which it was demolished.
