Thum Castle

The current four-winged courtyard complex was built as a castle in the 13th century. In the 17th/18th century and around 1900, the complex was completely redesigned.

The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1248. It was built by the Lords of [German Place Name], who served as ministeriales for the [German Region] Archbishops. The original complex consisted of a mighty keep, a residential building, and a curtain wall with several towers.

In the 17th century, the castle was converted into a representative residential palace. The keep was integrated into the new residential wing, and the curtain wall was replaced by a baroque garden. In the 18th century, further alterations were made, giving the complex its present-day appearance.

Around 1900, the complex underwent another major renovation. The interiors were modernized, and a new wing was added. During World War II, the building suffered minor damage, which was repaired in the post-war period. Today, the complex houses a museum and is a popular tourist destination.
