Venne Castle
Haus Venne is an estate referred to as a moated castle or water castle, located in Drensteinfurt-Mersch in Münsterland. Haus Venne is very close to Mersch train station, about 1.5 kilometers from Haus Itlingen in Ascheberg-Herbern, on the L671.
The first owners presumably bore the name of the house and were thus called von Venne. Later, the estate was owned by the von Galen family. They are first mentioned in documents in 1299. In 1410, a von Galen, presumably from Haus Venne, married the heiress of Haus Ermelinghof. In 1611, Venne then passed to the current owners, the von Ascheberg family. They had been Drosten of the episcopal office of Werne for generations. Even after the dissolution of the old administrative districts in 1802, Johann Mathias Freiherr von Ascheberg remained a Droste and eventually became the first district administrator of the new (first) district of Lüdinghausen.
Architectural Condition+
Haus Venne is a symmetrically arranged castle complex from the early 18th century, built around 1710 according to the plans of Lambert Friedrich von Corfey, consisting of a brick main house and four symmetrically arranged outbuildings. It is a spacious rectangle without wings. To the right and left of the castle entrance are two uniform buildings. The left one was furnished in 1771 as a house chapel with Rococo furnishings and a remarkable ceiling painting. In total, there are four symmetrically arranged outbuildings, of which the chapel is one. The other three are used as farm buildings for agriculture. Noteworthy is the garden house built by Johann Conrad Schlaun behind the main house in the park. The moats and ponds surrounding the house are fed by a body of water connected to the Werse to the north.
