Walbeck Castle

Walbeck Castle, also known as Haus Walbeck, is a listed moated castle in Walbeck, a district of the city of Geldern in the Kleve district in North Rhine-Westphalia. It dates back at least to the 14th century.

The house was the center of the Lordship of Walbeck. This was owned by the Schenken von Nideggen. Haus Walbeck itself was first mentioned in 1403. The nearby Haus Steprath was connected with the house and the lordship. In 1452, the lordship was divided. The division between the owners of Haus Walbeck and Haus Steprath lasted until the 18th century. After the 16th century, the owner families of the house changed several times. The von Bylandt and von Gramey were followed by the von Bönninghausen from 1653.

After the extinction of the Walbeck line at the beginning of the 19th century, ownership changed several times and the complex served as a residential building at the beginning of the 20th century. Slightly damaged in the Second World War, it was initially a recreation home for miners. From 1955, it was the seat of the Institute for Christian Social Pedagogy. In 1980, the owner family sold it to the Christliches Jugenddorfwerk (Christian Youth Village Association). Walbeck Castle has been listed on the monument protection list of the municipality of Geldern as number A 62 since January 28, 1992. A hotel has been located there since 2014.
