Welbergen Castle

The origins of Haus Welbergen date back to the 13th century, when the Lords of Welleberghe resided here between 1298 and 1330. The current manor house was built between 1560 and 1570 under Christian von Oldenhus. Extensive renovations marked the 18th century: windows and the staircase were renewed between 1730 and 1733, and from 1744 to 1746, the stucco decorations were restored. The gatehouse wing of the outer bailey and the curtain wall with three pavilions were presumably constructed between 1625 and 1632 and later partially renewed in the 18th and 19th centuries. Since 1731, the central pavilion has served as the St. Mary's Chapel.
