Woord Castle

Haus Woord, a neoclassical castle in Bocholt, was constructed between 1792 and 1795. The builder was the rent master Josef von Raesfeld. In 1827, his descendant Bernhard von Raesfeld sold the property to the Bocholt textile manufacturer Ludwig Schwartz. Three years later, in 1830, Schwartz also acquired the associated land and used it for the construction of steam-powered spinning and weaving mills. Originally, four statues depicting Diana, Aurora, Apollo, and Mercury, created around 1700 for the castle garden of Ahaus, adorned the area in front of the manor house. These originals returned to Ahaus in 1986 and were replaced by copies.
