Helene-Nickel-Stift

The Helene-Nickel-Stift, once a charitable convent, is located in the Aachen city region in North Rhine-Westphalia. It represents a remarkable example of civic engagement and the development of social institutions in the region.
History+
The establishment of the Helene-Nickel-Stift is attributed to the generous donations and bequests of the Protestant pensioner Helene Nickel, who passed away in 1894. In her will from 1891, she stipulated that all her real estate should be bequeathed to the Catholic Church in Eschweiler for a foundation. The house on Röher Bachstraße was consecrated as early as 1886, initially housing a children's day-care school, which later became a kindergarten. The official founding of the convent by the Sisters of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ took place on September 15, 1900. The sisters were active in Röhe until 1960 and operated an outpatient nursing service, the children's day-care school, and a sewing school within the Stift. These social services continued until September 1967, after which the building housed a Caritas facility for people with disabilities.
Location+
The former convent is situated in the Röhe district of the Aachen city region, in the western part of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
On site+
After its use as a Caritas facility for people with disabilities, the Helene-Nickel-Stift was converted into a residential building. The original facade of the historic structure was preserved during this transformation.
