Hermannsdenkmal (Hiddesen)

Memorial

Near Hiddesen in North Rhine-Westphalia, the Hermannsdenkmal, at an elevation of approximately 384 meters above sea level, commemorates the Cheruscan prince Arminius and the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, where Germanic tribes defeated the Roman legions.

History+

The construction of the Hermannsdenkmal took place between 1838 and 1875, based on designs by Ernst von Bandel. The monument's creation is set against the backdrop of the 19th-century German national movement, which, after the defeats against Napoleon Bonaparte, sought a national identity in the Germanic past. Arminius was stylized as a symbolic figure for the unification of the Germanic tribes.
