History+

From the Middle Ages to the Renaissance

The history of the Achim estate dates back to the Middle Ages. The first documented mention of a fortified residence on this site dates from 1342. At that time, it was a moated castle owned by the noble family "von Achim". Over the centuries, the property changed hands several times, often through marriage or inheritance.

In the 16th century, the estate came into the possession of the von Steinberg family, who began to transform the medieval castle into a more comfortable Renaissance residence. However, these early modifications were largely destroyed during the Thirty Years' War.

Construction of the Baroque Manor House

After the devastation of the Thirty Years' War, Friedrich von Steinberg commissioned the construction of a new manor house. The foundation stone was laid in 1701, and the building was completed in 1704. The design is attributed to the master builder Hermann Korb, who was also active at the court in Hanover. The manor house was built in the Baroque style, typical of the early 18th century, and served as the main residence of the von Steinberg family for generations.

19th and 20th Century

In the 19th century, minor alterations were made to the manor house, particularly to the interior, to adapt it to contemporary tastes. The estate remained in the possession of the von Steinberg family until 1928, when it was sold to the municipality of Achim due to economic difficulties.

During the Second World War, the manor house was used as a military hospital. Fortunately, it suffered no major damage. After the war, it served various purposes, including a school and administrative offices.

Current Use+

Today, the Manor House Achim is a cultural and administrative center for the municipality of Achim. It houses the municipal archive, a public library, and rooms for cultural events and exhibitions. The historic premises are also used for weddings and other celebrations.

The manor house is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, who appreciate its historical significance and architectural beauty. Regular guided tours offer insights into the eventful history of the building and its former inhabitants.
