Braunsroda Manor

In 1722, the baroque manor house was built. It is still preserved today. In the early 20th century, it received an extension to the front and a large entrance gate to the manor yard. In the early 1920s, the farm buildings were rebuilt in a style-appropriate manner. In the three centuries of its existence, the estate changed owners only twice. In 1901, it was acquired by Hans von Trebra, after the von Trebra family had already been the lords of the village since the 17th century. His family, the von Trebra and the von Bismarck – after the marriage of his daughter Adelheid to Levin Friedrich von Bismarck from Sollstedt – owned it until 1945. The three sons of Hans von Trebra fell in World War II. After the Red Army's invasion, the family had to leave the estate within an hour under threat of arrest. After uncompensated expropriation, it became a VEG (Volkseigenes Gut - People's Own Estate). In the 1950s, the chapel in a side wing of the manor house, which had served for the worship of estate and village residents, was desecrated for profane purposes. Previously, confirmations had still taken place there. Only after the reunification did the estate return to the possession of the von Bismarck family. Georg von Bismarck, grandson of the first private estate owner Hans von Trebra, first leased the estate from the Treuhandanstalt in 1992, before he was allowed to buy it back in 1998 after many years of effort and then had it extensively renovated. Today, the manor house contains holiday apartments and an estate café. Above all, the family cultivates a total of about 230 hectares of arable land around Braunsroda in organic farming.
