Büttelkow Manor

Buttelkow Manor is located in the Buttelkow district of the municipality of Biendorf in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, between Rerik and Kühlungsborn. It was built by architect Paul Korff around 1910/1912 on behalf of the Oldenburg banking family Ballin and equipped with the most modern technology of the time; for example, Korff installed a central vacuum cleaning system and central heating with hot water supply and provided the manor, as the first building of its kind in this region, with reinforced concrete ceilings on all floors.

The building features elements of Neo-Baroque, Classicism, and Art Nouveau. The manor is situated in a park with old trees. The associated pond is now also used as a fire-fighting pond and is protected as an archaeological monument, as it was part of the defensive system. Originally, the Buttelkow estate comprised about 240 hectares of agricultural land.

In 1945, the owners were forcibly expropriated and expelled by the communists. In its eventful history, the manor was used, among other things, as a refugee home, registry office, police station, and cinema. In 1998, it was purchased by Herrenhaus GbR and renovated in accordance with monument preservation standards. A non-profit association offers holiday apartments and art workshops in the manor.
