Ratzeburg Manor

After the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, the collegiate area with the Ratzeburg Cathedral Close became the Principality of Ratzeburg under the Duchy of Mecklenburg, and later, after the division in 1701, under Mecklenburg-Strelitz. A predecessor building, a pleasure house, was already erected in 1660 for Duke Christian Ludwig I. The current manor house was built in 1764 under the supervision of F. W. von dem Knesebeck for Adolf Friedrich IV, who, however, never used the building himself. Construction costs significantly exceeded original plans. Until 1815, it served as the official residence for ducal administrators before passing to the cathedral provosts in 1840, who resided there until the 20th century. Since 1973, the building has housed the District Museum.
