Essenrode Manor

Essenrode Manor House in Essenrode, a district of the municipality of Lehre in Lower Saxony, was built in 1738 as a manor house by Gotthart Heinrich August von Bülow in the late Baroque style.

The manor house, situated in the middle of a small English landscape park, is surrounded by a moat that was once part of an earlier fortification. The predecessor building, erected in 1337, was a defensive structure closely surrounded by farm buildings, which, in addition to the moat and a drawbridge, were intended to provide protection.

In the course of history, the complex was successively owned by three families. From 1337 to 1625, the von Garssenbüttel family owned the predecessor building. From 1627 to 1837, the castle was owned by the noble family von Bülow (including Friedrich Ernst von Bülow), who had the manor house built in its current form. Since 1837, it has belonged to the Lower Saxon imperial noble family von Lüneburg.
