Gorbitz Manor

The "Herrenhaus" (Manor House) is a remnant of the historic Gorbitz Chamber Estate, which was already mentioned as particularly significant in a 1904 listing of the architectural and art monuments of the Kingdom of Saxony. The building of the Gorbitz "Herrenhaus" has undergone centuries of historical development and is connected in many ways with the history of the city of Dresden and the Saxon court. As early as the 16th century, the "Herrenhaus" is verifiable as an outwork and has since played a significant economic role in the Dresden area and for the management of the Electoral Court in Dresden. In 1644, the Chamber Estate, which emerged from the outwork, came into the possession of the Saxon Electress Magdalena Sybilla. In 1634, she married the Danish Crown Prince Christian, son of King Christian IV of Denmark, in Copenhagen. When the Saxon-Danish couple traveled to Dresden in 1647, a sad historical event of great consequence occurred at the Electress's Gorbitz outwork. On June 2, 1647, the Danish Crown Prince died here. Furthermore, there was a wooden drinking water pipeline from the Gorbitz Chamber Estate to Dresden Castle.

Until the 1970s, the generously laid out three-sided farmstead was still almost completely preserved. Only in the course of ruthless socialist building planning were parts of this valuable monument stock demolished and replaced by untypical functional buildings for the German Reichsbahn's railway yard. The "Herrenhaus", which was spared from demolition and whose building fabric, according to available research results, largely originated between 1569 and 1659, showed serious structural damage after the end of the GDR due to years of great neglect. To save this urbanistically valuable monument from its impending demise, the Herrenhaus was acquired by the architectural firm Schumann and Kurth from the Treuhandgesellschaft and rebuilt with great enthusiasm.
