Groß Winkelhausen Manor

The first mention of the knight's seat Groß Winkelhausen dates to the 12th century. In 1271, Johann de Zeppenheim is named as the lord of the estate, followed by Ludolf de Winkelhausen around 1288 and 1290. Knight Hermann von Winkelhausen resided at the complex in 1456; his son Ludger inherited it in 1486 and later moved the family seat to Schloss Kalkum. In 1634, Johann Wilhelm Freiherr von Winkelhausen was the owner and bailiff of Düsseldorf. During the war against Louis XIV, the fortified house suffered damage from Brandenburg troops in 1651. After Johann Wilhelm's death in 1667, his daughter Johanna Maria Theresia, who was married to Arnold Freiherr von Wachtendonk, inherited the property. Further damage occurred in 1689 and 1690 due to military occupations, for which the state parliament granted compensation.
