Holzdorf Manor

The first mention of a place called Halsdorf dates back to July 4, 1271. In the 14th century, the Counts of Orlamünde owned a country estate and in 1333 transferred ecclesiastical jurisdiction to Oberweimar. The village largely fell into disuse and was no longer listed in church registers by 1500. The current manor house was built between 1690 and 1750. Until 1874, the estate was owned by the Weitzenberg family, descendants of Lucas Cranach the Elder. The property experienced its heyday in the 1920s and 1930s under Dr. Otto Krebs, who acquired it in 1917. He had the manor house redesigned and expanded to accommodate his collection of French Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist works, as well as sculptures. A landscape park with sculptures was also created.
