The Hornow estate was first documented on August 24, 1436, when it was owned by the Lords of Gersdorff. After several changes of ownership, Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau acquired the estate in 1855, but sold it just six years later to the Wilkins family. The current manor house was built in 1864 and modernized in 1903 under Erwin Wilkins, and again renovated in 1937. In 1944, it briefly served as an alternative location for the Swedish embassy before being occupied by the Red Army in 1945.
