The estate was first mentioned in 1222 as a knight's seat by Caesarius of Heisterbach. The owners were born Bach- and Waldgrafen. In the 14th century, the family von Schönrath, from the 15th to the 17th century the lineage von Quadt zu Buschfeld were owners of the estate.
