The Koeningen Manor House in Werl, North Rhine-Westphalia, is a historic estate whose origins date back to the Middle Ages.

History+

The first documented mention of Koeningen House occurred in 1348 as a Cologne fief. In December 1485, Werl's mayor Wilhelm Papen was enfeoffed with the manor house by the Counts of Tecklenburg. In 1691, the Barons von Plettenberg-Hovestadt acquired the feudal lordship from Count Klaus von Tecklenburg. Inheritance disputes led to parts of the estate being inherited separately, with a portion going to Erasmus Schöler in 1543. Following a settlement before the Imperial Chamber Court in 1626, Bertram von Papen reunited the entire property. Through the marriage of his daughter Anna to Dietrich von Eickel, the estate later passed to him. Further lawsuits in 1683 and 1691 in favor of Wilhelm Albert Papen secured his ownership.
