The community was first mentioned in a document in 1162.

The Counts of Hagen exerted a significant influence on the town and its development. Friedrich Philipp vom Hagen (1683-1754) was district administrator of the County of Hohnstein, which was under Prussian rule. This first district administrator of the Nordhausen district is still commemorated today in Niedergebra by the old Hagen Castle, which was called the "Blue Court" because of its slate roof. It was built between 1725 and 1735 and is modeled after a moated castle.
