Poggenburg Manor

Poggenburg Manor in Thedinghausen, originally built in the 13th century, was never a classic castle but a fortified farmstead. It served various purposes, from an agricultural estate to a trading post, and today houses the municipal town hall.

The origins of the estate date back to the 13th century when it was built in Thedinghausen. Known as Poggenburg, meaning “Toad Castle,” it was a fortified farmstead subordinate to Thedinghausen Castle, built in 1285. From 1580, Poggenburg served intermittently as an official residence. In 1721, Friedrich Andreas Scheele took over the estate, presumably using it for agriculture. In 1769, Pastor Johann Heinrich Gudewill acquired the property, and his son Johann Daniel Heinrich Gudewill developed it into a trading post for linen, tobacco, and financial transactions.
