Rath Manor (Krefeld)

The origins of Haus Rath date back to the 12th century, when a fortified complex was built on a motte at this location. Around 1200, a three-story residential tower made of basalt, tuff, and trachyte was erected, its construction suggesting a possible connection to the Imperial Palace of Kaiserswerth. Haus Rath was first documented in 1246, in the possession of the Knights of Rode. In the 14th century, a palas was added, and in the 15th century, the complex changed hands through marriage to the Knights of Hüls. Haus Rath was expanded, including the addition of economic wings in the 17th and 18th centuries. The estate largely escaped destruction during wars. After a period of decay in the 1970s and 1980s, the complex underwent renovation between 1988 and 1991 and was converted into residential units.
