Schmölln Manor

Schmölln is located not far from Bischofswerda. The local manor house is situated in the middle of the knight's estate, which was first mentioned in 1379. At that time, the Haugwitz brothers are named as owners. From 1724 to 1728, Schmölln-Putzkau belonged to Count Jakob Heinrich von Flemming (Saxon cabinet minister and field marshal general). The manor house was only built between 1747 and 1750. In 1751, Andreas von Riaucour (Catholic Baron, Privy Councillor and Saxon envoy) bought Schmölln Castle. Through marriage in 1794, the more well-known double name Schall-Riaucour emerged, a significant Saxon noble family. The estate remained in the possession of this family until 1945. Afterwards, it was expropriated, and in 1951, a kindergarten was established in the manor house. After that, the castle was left to decay until 2010. In autumn 2010, the "Förderverein Schloss Schmölln e.V." (Friends of Schmölln Castle Association) acquired Schmölln Castle to protect it from further damage. Initial securing works have already taken place.
