Sierhagen Manor

The origins of the Sierhagen estate date back to the 12th century, when it was first mentioned as the Wendish noble castle Syra. Around 1304, Syra was owned by the Syra family. Around 1316, the “Feste Syraa” was mentioned in a Lübeck document as the property of the knights Marquard and Eccard von Westensee. From the Middle Ages until the 17th century, the Sierhagen estate, with a few interruptions, was owned by the Schleswig-Holstein noble family Buchwaldt. In 1666, the Counts Dernath took over the lordship for two generations, followed by the noble family Brockdorff. In 1765, Wulf Heinrich von Thienen acquired the property, which he later bequeathed to the Plessen family. Since 1809, Sierhagen has been in the possession of this family, who later called themselves Scheel von Plessen or Scheel-Plessen. Personalities such as Carl von Scheel-Plessen and Victor Baron von Plessen were born on the estate. The original double house was rebuilt in neoclassical style in 1825 by the Hamburg architect Alexis de Chateauneuf.
