Stendorf Manor

The name of the estate, first mentioned in the 13th century, and its associated village was originally Steendorpe (Stone Village). Kasseedorf, Sagau, and Griebel belonged to the estate district. From 1654, the estate, together with the estates of Mönchneversdorf and Lensahn, formed an indivisible family property, which included 13 estates upon the dissolution of the estate districts in 1928.

In the 18th century, the estate underwent a fundamental transformation. Instead of the original manor house, which was surrounded by a moat and whose site is now occupied by the administrator's house, a new manor house was built in 1750 and a spacious park was laid out. The entire complex of estate and village has been a protected monument since 1985. The village and estate complex is still almost completely preserved today.

In 1876, a castle was built on a hill by Lake Stendorf, which, however, was not inhabited year-round and was used as a hunting lodge. In 1932, the former hunting lodge was converted into the current manor house by the Malente architect Alfred Schulze.

Until 1932, the estate was owned by the Dukes of Oldenburg. In 1932, the estate, then approximately 450 hectares in size, was sold to a Hamburg merchant family and is now owned by the Herzog family. Between 2000 and 2008, the buildings of the estate were fundamentally and historically renovated, and the park was partially restored.

Gut Stendorf is still used for agriculture today. The total size of the agricultural operation today amounts to approximately 1,000 hectares of arable land, about 250 hectares of forest, and the approximately 60-hectare Lake Stendorf, which is fed by the Schwentine. Gut Stendorf, together with its village, now forms a district of the municipality of Kasseedorf with around 40 inhabitants. The estate is managed by the estate administration located on the premises.
