Svindersvik Manor

Svindersvik Manor, a prominent example of Swedish Rococo architecture, is picturesquely situated on the southern shore of Svindersviken in the municipality of Nacka, east of Stockholm. It is considered one of Sweden's best-preserved Rococo estates, offering a unique glimpse into 18th-century life.
History+
The estate was built around 1740 as a summer residence for the wealthy merchant Claes Grill and his family. The design was by the renowned architect Carl Hårleman. Claes Grill, a significant merchant and director of the East India Company, influenced the house's rich furnishings with international touches. The Grill family sold Svindersvik in 1780, after which it passed through various owners. In 1949, the Nordic Museum took over the administration of the estate.

Today, Svindersvik serves as a museum and is open to visitors during the summer months. The two-story main building, constructed of plastered brickwork, features a strictly symmetrical layout. Inside, visitors can find original furniture from the founding period, tiled stoves with blue decor, and Chinese rice paper wallpapers. A large billiard room on the upper floor houses the original 18th-century table. The kitchen wing, located to the east and built on a 16th-century cellar vault, boasts an intact, modern-for-its-time interior. On the beach stands the pavilion, built around 1750, with a large ballroom. Notably, no electricity or modern heating systems were ever installed in the main building, kitchen wing, or pavilion, thus preserving their original condition.
