Herz-Jesu-Kirche

The introduction of the Reformation in the Principality of Palatinate-Neuburg in 1542 profoundly influenced the religious landscape of Sulzbach and Rosenberg. The original 14th-century parish church of St. Johannes Baptist was used simultaneously by Catholics and Protestants from 1653 until 1899, following an edict by Christian August of Palatinate-Sulzbach. With the completion of the Herz-Jesu-Kirche in Rosenberg in 1899, this simultaneum ended, and the Catholic community gained its own place of worship.

The Herz-Jesu-Kirche is situated in Sulzbach-Rosenberg, a town in the Amberg-Sulzbach district in the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria. It belongs to the Diocese of Regensburg and is located in an area known for its historical significance.

Today, the Herz-Jesu-Kirche serves as a Roman Catholic parish church and is listed as an architectural monument in the Bavarian monument registry. The Neo-Gothic structure, designed by Friedrich Niedermayer and built between 1898 and 1899, features a nave with a central aisle and two side aisles, a transept, and a recessed choir. The church tower, topped with a pointed spire, houses a clock and a belfry behind biforium sound openings.
