Herz-Jesu-Kloster St. Adelheid

The monastery was established in 1920 when the Sacred Heart Order acquired the grounds of the former Pützchen sanatorium. This area also included buildings of a former Carmelite monastery that cared for pilgrims visiting the Adelheidis spring. The nuns set up a monastery within the existing structures and founded a girls' school with an attached boarding school. The theologian Romano Guardini served as a house chaplain at the monastery in the early 1920s. A new school building was constructed in 1925, incorporating parts of the sanatorium. In 1926, the order sold a portion of its property, including the old monastery buildings, to Discalced Carmelites from Cologne, who established the Carmel St. Josef there. During World War II, the order in Pützchen was expropriated, and the nuns were conscripted for nursing the wounded. The school had to close in 1940 and was used as a military hospital. After the war, the school reopened in 1946. The school leadership remained with the order until 1977, which also provided some of the teaching staff. Isa Vermehren joined the order in 1951 and directed the Sankt-Adelheid-Gymnasium from 1961 to 1969. The boarding school closed in 1979. From 1985, the Archdiocese of Cologne took over the sponsorship of the school. The vacant boarding school building from 1971 was converted into a new monastery building in the early 2000s, completed in 2004, and comprises 34 apartments and various common rooms.

The monastery is situated in the Pützchen-Bechlinghoven district of Bonn, a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

Today, the complex serves as a monastery building for the nuns and houses apartments and various common rooms. The school continues to operate, now under the sponsorship of the Archdiocese of Cologne.
