Duke Castle
The so-called Herzogsburg is a large horseshoe-shaped complex integrated into the city wall in the northeast corner of the old town of Sankt Veit an der Glan. The building's core in the east wing and the corner tower dates back to the 13th century. From 1523 to 1529, it was expanded as a princely arsenal. Since 1619, the complex has been in private ownership.
The Herzogsburg cannot have been the Romanesque residence of the Duke of Carinthia, as the city was then still limited to the area of the upper square.
Description+
The east wing is a simple, three-story building with simply profiled, Gothic portals, doors, and windows. The sundial was painted in 1529. The massive, five-story, square corner tower with loopholes is crowned by a pyramid roof. The upper floor of the adjoining north wing has partially collapsed. In the western residential wing, double-story arcades with ribbed star vaults and an open staircase are preserved. All windows and doors have chamfered, late Gothic stone frames and partly iron doors from the construction period. The courtyard is enclosed by a high wall facing Burggasse. Above the entrance is a coat of arms stone with a "Bindenschild" and the Carinthian coat of arms from 1524. From 1948 until its relocation to the former Bürgerspital, the St. Veiter Stadtmuseum, founded in 1886, was housed on the first floor of the east wing.
