Herzogshof Castle

The Herzogshof (Duke's Court) on the Old Corn Market in the old town of Regensburg was the residence of the Bavarian ducal family of the Agilolfings since the 6th century. Afterwards, it was a royal palace of the Carolingians. Arnulf of Carinthia had a new palace built on today's Ägidienplatz, which caused the old palace to lose importance.

Due to King Henry II's preference for Bamberg as an ecclesiastical seat, the Regensburg palace further lost importance in favor of Freising and Bamberg. The Herzogshof has been in Bavarian state ownership since the rule of the Wittelsbachs. In the 1930s, the Herzogshof underwent fundamental restoration.

The current building fabric in the lower part (Romanesque round-arch windows in the east facade) dates from the year 1200. The 2nd upper floor was only built later. In the southern part, there used to be a house chapel. Inside, there is a late Romanesque palace hall. Immediately next to the Herzogshof stands the Roman Tower.
