The origin of the castle lies in an old knight's estate, which was mentioned in the 12th century as the Zufrass'sches Rittergut. In 1580, Count Georg Ernst zu Henneberg gave the estate to Caspar von Hanstein as a fief. In 1596, he built the current castle on the medieval foundations.
