Heilig-Kreuz

The origins of the monastery date back to 1857, when the Alexian Brothers from Aachen received permission to provide outpatient nursing care in Mönchengladbach. Three friars began their work in modest circumstances and gained the trust of the population through their care. A donated plot of land enabled the inauguration of the St. Josef Alexianer Monastery in 1859, which initially included a prayer room and from 1869 a Neo-Gothic church. This was built according to the plans of Hugo Schneider, who also worked on Cologne Cathedral. In addition to the monastery, a psychiatric hospital was established from 1862/63. The complex was steadily expanded and served as a military hospital during World War I. From 1870 to 1900, Chaplain Adolf Oehmen, as the monastery's house chaplain and pastor of Westend, shaped religious life. Carl Sonnenschein, a well-known social reformer, also regularly read early mass here.

The Holy Cross Monastery is located in Mönchengladbach, a city in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is situated in the Westend district at the intersection of Luisenstraße and Alexianerstraße.

Today, the Holy Cross Church is a Roman Catholic parish church and continues to form a religious center in the Westend district. The former monastery complex and hospital are integrated into the urban structure.
