Predjama Castle (Predjamski Grad)

The castle's origins date back to the 12th century, when the first structure was built into the inaccessible rock face. Archaeological findings confirm that the cave was inhabited as early as the Stone Age. Throughout its history, the castle was owned by the Patriarchs of Aquileia and later the Habsburgs. It gained its greatest fame through the robber knight Erasmus of Luegg in the 15th century. He used the castle as a retreat after killing an imperial relative. During a siege by imperial troops that lasted over a year, Erasmus mocked his opponents by pelting them with food, which he allegedly obtained through a secret cave system. According to legend, he was killed in 1484 by a traitor during a visit to the latrine. The castle's current appearance dates from 1570, when it was rebuilt under Johann Cobenzl, Baron of Prossegg zu Lueg. Later, it passed into the possession of the Counts Coronini von Cronberg and the Princes Windisch-Graetz.

Predjama Castle is located near the village of Predjama in the Primorsko-notranjska (Inner Carniola Karst region) district, in the Vzhodna Slovenija (Eastern Slovenia) region, Slovenia, at an elevation of approximately 548 meters above sea level.

Today, Predjama Castle is open to visitors. A museum is housed within the castle and parts of the cave, displaying weapons, household items, paintings, and tools. The cave itself is also open for guided tours, allowing visitors to explore parts of the extensive cave system.
