The origins of the Hofburg date back to the first half of the 13th century, when the Babenbergs began its construction. It was first documented in 1279 under Rudolf I and later expanded under King Ottokar II Przemysl. Initially part of Vienna's city fortifications with defensive towers and moats, the complex transformed into a representative residence from the mid-16th century under Ferdinand I. Continuous extensions and renovations until the 20th century shaped its appearance, with Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Historicism blending harmoniously. Until 1918, the Hofburg was the main residence of the Habsburgs.
