Hofgarten Castle

The small palace in the Hofgarten at the entrance to Wertheim-Eichel now houses three private art collections. These are paintings and watercolors of the Berlin Secession, 19th-century painters from the Rhine-Neckar region, and a porcelain collection.

The Rococo palace was built in 1777 for Count Friedrich Ludwig von Dietrich Gottlieb Betschler and stands today in the Eichelhofgarten, a small park that also includes the Löwenstein burial chapel. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, the palace was used as a hospital. From 1873, it was rented out, including – for an annual rent of 400 guilders – to the writer and journalist Otto von Corvin.[58] The Eichelhof palace with its park was designated as the Monument of the Month August/September 2006 by the Baden-Württemberg Monument Foundation.

In 2011, the palace hosted the exhibition Otto Modersohn and Max Liebermann, which, among other things, commemorated Modersohn's repeated stays in Wertheim with his third wife Louise Modersohn-Breling and the paintings created during that time.

The Hofgarten Chapel was donated by Princess Friederike zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg as a burial place for her husband Prince Wilhelm, who fell in World War I in 1915, and was completed in 1917. Besides Prince Wilhelm, his wife and their common daughter Dorothea, as well as Ernst Fürst zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg and his wife Wanda, also found their final resting place here.
