Hofmannsthal Castle

The castle was built in 1724 on behalf of Prince Trautson. A few years later, Maria Theresia of Austria acquired the property and gifted it to her confidante and Mistress of the Robes, Countess Karoline von Fuchs-Mollard. From this period also stem the former names Maria-Theresien-Schlössl and Fuchsschlössl. After the Countess's death, the castle changed hands multiple times. In 1901, the Viennese writer Hugo von Hofmannsthal moved into the Schlössl, where he lived until his death in 1929. His wife Gerty continued to live there until her escape to England in 1938. Subsequently, the local poet Maria Grengg inhabited the property from the early 1940s until her death in 1963. A restoration of the Hofmannsthal-Schlössl took place in 1988.
