The High Castle in Füssen is one of Bavaria's best-preserved medieval castle complexes. Its Gothic architecture continues to shape the townscape today.

History+

The history of the site dates back to the late Roman Imperial period when the Foetibus fort was built here. In the 8th century, the bishops of Augsburg founded the nearby St. Mang Monastery. The castle hill, originally owned by the monastery, became a point of contention between the bishops and the Bavarian dukes in the 13th century. After disputes, Duke Ludwig II renounced his claims. In 1322, the Prince-Bishopric of Augsburg acquired the castle hill and established the seat of the Füssen administrative office there.
