Lidzbark Warminski Town Fortifications - High Gate

The High Gate (Polish: Brama Wysoka) in Lidzbark Warmiński (German Heilsberg) in Warmia formed the western gate of the city.
The late Gothic building, erected in 1352 (other sources speak of 1466 to 1478), is the only preserved city gate of Heilsberg. The preserved building is the fore-building of the city's western gate. The central part, decorated with blind arches, is merged with two round towers. Like the Gdańsk Crane Gate, the High Gate is a rare example in the region of the Lower Saxon-Low German gate type. The concluding pointed arch frieze and the pointed arch on the field side date from 1849. Between the red bricks, black bricks form the shape of an ornamental "x". At half height, stone spheres can be seen, dating from 1520, when the Teutonic Order tried to retake the city.
