Holyrood Palace

Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh is a residence located at the eastern end of the Royal Mile, which leads directly to Edinburgh Castle. This site, adjacent to Holyrood Park, now serves as the official Scottish residence of the British Queen.

History+

The origins of Holyrood Palace date back to 1128, when Holyrood Abbey was founded on this spot. This abbey once functioned as a sanctuary, offering protection to debtors within its hunting grounds. The abbey's original guesthouse was gradually expanded. For instance, a residential tower was built in the northwest of the complex between 1528 and 1532. The palace acquired its current form in the 17th century.
