Hore Abbey

The remains of the Abbey can be visited

Hore Abbey, a monastic ruin in Ireland, is situated at the foot of the Rock of Cashel. Originally founded by Benedictines, it later became a Cistercian monastery and represents the last foundation of this order on Irish soil.

History+

The origins of Hore Abbey lie with the Benedictines. According to a legend, Archbishop David McCarvill of Cashel had a dream in 1272 in which the Benedictine monks were planning his death. Consequently, he expelled the order and handed over the abbey and its associated lands to Cistercian monks, whom he brought from Mellifont Abbey.
